We are pleased to announce the completion of the first phase of the Ethiopian Railway Corporation (ERC) climate finance support programme under the UK, Norway and Denmark-funded Strategic Climate Institutions Programme (SCIP). Ethiopia is building up to 5,000 km of railways by 2020. Carbon Africa Ltd and Climate Focus B.V. assisted ERC and its Government partners in the development and implementation of a climate finance strategy. The railway corporation plans to tap into carbon market revenues through Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) registration and seeks concessional finance for Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action (NAMA) development. Capacity building to strengthen ERC's institutional capacity and enhance climate finance readiness was also a focus of the first project phase. At the 20th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP 20), ERC launched a web presence set up to highlight the project and the major milestones achieved.
