Kipeto Energy Limited and Carbon Africa held a CDM Local Stakeholder Consultation for the proposed Kipeto 100 MW Wind Power Project, on 6 February 2012 at the Bounty Hotel in Ngong. Stakeholders were invited to discuss the progress of the proposed project, an update on the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment as well as share views, expertise, and inputs with regard to the proposed project and the role carbon credits could play for the successful implementation of the project.

Carbon Africa is pleased to announce the successful Gold Standard (GS) registration of the Lake Turkana 310 MW Wind Power Project in northern Kenya. The GS approval was achieved due to the planned wind farm’s sustainable development benefits, and follows the earlier CDM registration of the project in February 2011. This means that as of 22 November 2011, East Africa is host to the largest Gold Standard/CDM jointly registered project the world in terms of both estimated annual emission reductions and installed capacity.

SimGas BV, Climate Focus and Carbon Africa held a CDM Local Stakeholder Consultation for the proposed SimGas household biogas project in Tanzania, on 6 October 2011 at the Morogoro Hotel in Morogoro.  Stakeholders were invited to share views, expertise, and inputs with regard to the proposed project and the role carbon credits could play for the successful implementation of the project in Tanzania.

Camco, Carbon Africa and Climate Change Concern were awarded a long-term contract by the Belgian Technical Cooperation (BTC) to provide CDM, carbon market and climate finance technical assistance in Uganda.  The consortium will support and advise the Government of Uganda and the private sector to develop and register a number of CDM projects as well as build local expertise in the country.  The contract will run for three years, starting in September 2011.

Nuru Energy and Carbon Africa Limited held a Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Local Stakeholder Consultation for the proposed Nuru Energy Lighting Programme in Kenya, on 28 September 2011 at the YMCA Central Hostel from 9am- 12pm. Stakeholders were invited to share views, expertise, and inputs with regard to implementation of the proposed programme and the role carbon credits could play in successful roll out of the programme in Kenya.

Carbon Africa Ltd., Renewable Energy Ventures (K) Ltd. in collaboration with the Office of the Prime Minister, Environment and Climate Change Coordination Unit organized a two-day intensive training workshop on the 16 - 17 August 2011 to increase understanding of and address some of the most pertinent issues in relation to the workings of the carbon markets in Kenya as well as globally. The training workshop provided key knowledge and information regarding the carbon development and trading processes and will offer insights in the latest developments with regard to future carbon regimes.

Carbon Africa attended the Africa Carbon Forum from 4 - 6 July in Marrakech, Morocco. This Forum brought together main actors and stakeholders from the carbon markets: project owners, project developers, representatives from economic sectors relevant for the CDM, national climate change focal points, national Clean Development Mechanism offices, Investment Promotion Agencies, Designated National Authorities (DNAs), service providers, financial institutions and intermediary companies and representatives from several multilateral agencies. Carbon Africa was keen to ensure that African carbon project priorities were well highlighted at the Forum.

Carbon Africa took part in the Carbon Expo from  1 - 3 June 2011 in Barcelona, Spain. This event brought together over 2,600 delegates from over 110 countries to discuss the current state and future of carbon markets and climate finance focusing on how economic activities could be developed out of the green agenda as well as the development of new markets, new partnerships, new opportunities and the capacities and capabilities that will need to be created in developed and developing countries.

Carbon Africa is pleased to announce the successful registration of the Lake Turkana 310 MW Wind Power Project in northern Kenya by the Executive Board of the UN Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). The project becomes the fourth in Kenya, and the first African wind farm south of the Sahara, to achieve CDM registration. Once implemented, the project will be the largest wind farm in Africa. Carbon Africa gave a two-day training course on Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and Carbon Trading to staff members of Kenya Rural Electrification Authority. The training was intended to enable trainees to identify potential CDM projects, understand the process of developing carbon credits, understand the trading process, identify key issues in the negotiation of an Emission Reduction Purchase Agreement and be able to take decisions on the viability of developing a project as a CDM project.

Carbon Africa is pleased to announce the successful CDM and Gold Standard validation of Lake Turkana 310 MW Wind Power Project in Northern Kenya. The final validation report has been submitted to the UNFCCC along with the request for registration. The project once implemented, will be one of the largest wind farms and largest CDM projects in Africa. Carbon Africa has been providing CDM development and asset management support to the project since early 2009. 

 

February 2011 

On 21 February 2011, Nuru Energy East Africa signed and Emission Reduction Option Agreement with Bank of America Merrill Lynch for CER's generated from Nuru Energy's rural off-grid lighting project that replaces kerosene in a number of African countries. Carbon Africa acted as transaction advisor to Nuru Energy for the multi-million dollar deal, which included a significant upfront payment to help finance the roll-out of the project. Carbon Africa is developing the CDM component of the first Nuru Energy project in Rwanda, currently under validation, and the PoA for subsequent countries in Africa.

In memorial: It is with sadness that we witness the sudden passing of Paul Kirai on 6 February 2011. Paul was a colleague since 2004 and most recently a partner on a project Carbon Africa was helping to implement in the waste sector. A well-attended funeral was held at Paul's family home in Thigio on 11 February 2011. We offer our condolences to Paul's family, friends and colleagues. His memory will live on in his contribution to sustainable development in Kenya.

Carbon Africa gave presentations on CDM PoA's rules and emergung issues as well as their potential in Tanzania at a workshop in exploiting the potential for CDM PoA's in Tanzania organized by the KfW Development Bank on 1 February 2011 at the Protea Courtyard Hotel in Dar es Salaam Tanzania. The objectives of the workshop were: to promote CDM PoA project development and implementation in Kenya, identify potential project developers in the country as well as introduce services and support (both technical and financial) offered by the KfW carbon fund to project developers in Tanzania.

Carbon Africa took part as a participant and exhibitor at the Green Growth in Kenya conference on 31 January 2011 at the Royal Danish Embassy in Nairobi. The objective of the conference was to reach a common understanding on Green Growth, identify major opportunities and obstacles, and recommend private sector actions that will result in Green Growth and secure Kenya's future. Carbon Africa took part in a two day regional workshop on legal and regulatory capacity building for carbon trading and CDM investment from 27 – 28 September 2010 in Nairobi, Kenya. The objective of the workshop was to build capacities on the legal aspects of carbon trading and the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) among stakeholders that are active in this field in African countries. Carbon Africa presented on Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) to the Geothermal Development Company (GDC). The presentation was intended to give more information on how GDC and its partners could potentially use carbon credits and what role if any GDC could play in the process.

A CDM and Gold Standard Local Stakeholder Consultation for the Nuru Energy Lighting Project was held at La Palisse Hotel in Kigali, Rwanda. This brought together various relevant stakeholders including local residents, policy makers, NGO's, entrepreneurs and students who provided their inputs to ensure sustainability of the project.

Carbon Africa Ltd. gave a presentation at Kenyatta University on 25 March 2010 to members of the department of engineering who are part of the Energy Corps Club. Fifty club members including both lecturers and students with an interest in environment issues and renewable energy took part.

Carbon Africa Ltd. in partnership with Joint Environmental Techniques, a biogas and charcoal briquetting company based out of Dar es Salaam, Ms Bijal Shah a mechanical engineer and Africa Bio Products, a Kenyan biogas and waste water treatment company installed three pilot urban organic waste biogas units in Nairobi. This pilot was funded by the Netherlands Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality through a project lead by LEI-Wageningen University of the Netherlands to test municipal waste management solutions and is intended as a contribution to the UNEP and City Council of Nairobi integrated solid waste management strategy for the City of Nairobi.

This regional event brought together over 600 delegates including project developers, buyers and traders, government authorities, validators, international organizations and banks, among others. The East African Power Pool hosted from 1-5 February 2010 in Nairobi a USAID-sponsored event on Electricity Markets to Meet Tomorrow’s Demand. The focus was on regional energy market integration and Carbon Africa took part to see how carbon credits can have a role to play in current and future infrastructure development.

Carbon Africa was in London from 28-29 January 2010 to take part in a DFID-organized Low Carbon Advanced Market Commitments workshop. The purpose of the brainstorming session was to identify policy measures and possible pilot projects to support private sector up-scaling of clean tech investments in Africa.

Carbon Africa contributed an article called “The Dinosaur at the Party” to The Mark News online website with our take on the possible outcomes of the Copenhagen climate change conference and the role of Canada therein.

 

The Malindi Music Festival for Children, a first of its kind, saw young and old alike join in this all-day event showcasing local music, singing, dancing and acrobatics on the Kenyan north coast. Carbon Africa was asked to assist with festival waste management and spend the day picking up litter and keeping the venue clean while having fun with the kids.

 

On 4 December 2009, Carbon Africa presented at a Greening the Tea Industry in East Africa (GTIEA) event in Nairobi, Kenya. The GTIEA initiative is co-implemented by UNEP and the African Development Bank as is being executed by the East African Tea Trade Association (EATTA). Carbon Africa is providing advice on how carbon finance can help to realize small hydropower projects in the tea sector in East Africa.

Carbon Africa participated in 22-23 October 2009 UNEP Finance Initiative Global Roundtable held in Cape Town, South Africa, which also coincided with South African Green Week. Renewable project developers, banks and private investors were present and discussed topics around the theme of “Financing change, changing finance.”
